부자가 될 권리
WHATEVER may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich.
가난을 미덕이라고 아무리 칭송한다 해도 만약 그가 부자가 아니면, 진정으로 완전하게 성공적인 삶으로 끝날 가능성이 없다는 사실이 남아있다.
No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money;
만약 그가 충분한 돈이 없으면, 어떤 사람도 재능의 최고점이나 영혼의 발전을 최대로 가능성 있게 할 수 없다.
for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with.
왜냐하면 영혼을 펼침과 재능의 발달을 위해서는, 그는 사용할 많은 물질의 사용을 해야만 하는데 그가 그것을 살 돈이 없으면 이런 것들을 소유할 수 없기 때문이다.
A man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things;
사람은 물질의 사용으로써, 마음, 영혼, 육체를 발전시키고, 물건들의 소유주가 되기 위해 사회는 그렇게 조직화되어 있어서 사람은 돈을 가져야 한다.
therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich.
따라서 인간의 모든 진보의 기본은 '부자가 되는 과학'이 되어야 한다.
The object of all life is development;
모든 인생의 목적은 발전이다.
and everything that lives has an inalienable1) right to all the development it is capable of attaining.
생명을 가진 모든 것은 획득 가능한 모든 발전에 이를 뺏을 수 없는 권리를 갖는다.
Man's right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich.
인생의 수단에 대한 인간의 권리는 그의 최대한의 정신적, 영적, 육체적, 자유에 필수적인 모든 것을 제한 없이 사용할 권리, 다시 말하면 부자가 될 권리를 말한다.
In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way;
나는 이 책에서 부를 비교적인 방식에서 말하지 않겠다.
to be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little.
진정한 부유함이 됨은 작은 것에 만족을 의미하지 않는다.
No man ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more.
만약 그가 더 이상의 것을 사용하고 즐길 수 있는 사람이라면, 그보다 적은 것에 만족할 필요가 없다.
The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life;
자연의 목적은 생명의 진보와 계발이다.
and every man should have all that can contribute to the power; elegance, beauty, and richness of life;
모든 사람은 우아함, 아름다음, 인생의 풍요로움인 생명력에 공헌 할 수 있는 모든 것을 가져야 한다.
to be content with less is sinful.
덜 죄책감을 느낌에 만족해야 한다.
The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich;
부자란 모든 인생에서 할 수 있는 평생 자신이 원하는 모든 것을 소유한 사람은 부유하다.
and no man who has not plenty of money can have all he wants.
그가 원하는 모든 풍족한 돈을 가지지 못하는 사람은 없다.
Life has advanced so far, and become so complex, that even the most ordinary man or woman requires a great amount of wealth in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness.
삶은 멀리 진보하고, 그렇게 다양해졌으며, 가장 평범한 사람들도 거의 완성에 근접한 삶을 살기 위해서는 막대한 양의 부를 필요로 하다.
Every person naturally wants to become all that they are capable of becoming;
모든 사람은 그들이 될 수 있는 모든 것이 되길 원한다.
this desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature;
내재된 가능성을 실현하려는 그 욕망은 인간의 본성에 내재되어 있다.
we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be.
우리는 우리가 되고자 하는 모든 것을 자신이 원하지 않을 수 없다.
Success in life is becoming what you want to be;
성공적인 삶은 자신이 원하는 사람이 되어 가는 것이다.
you can become what you want to be only by making use of things, and you can have the free use of things only as you become rich enough to buy them.
당신은 단지 물질을 사용함으로써 당신이 원하는 사람이 되어가고, 그 물질을 살 만큼 부자가 되는 만큼 물질들을 자유롭게 사용할 수 있다.
To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge.
부자가 되는 과학을 이해하는 것은 따라서 모든 다른 지식 중에서 가장 중요하다.
There is nothing wrong in wanting to get rich.
부자가 되고자 하는 원함에서 잘못된 것이 아무도 없다.
The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life;
부자가 되고자 하는 욕망은 실제로 더 풍요롭고 더 꽉찬, 더 부유한 삶을 살고자 하는 욕망이다.
and that desire is praise worthy.
그러한 욕망은 칭찬받을 가치가 있다.
The man who does not desire to live more abundantly is abnormal, and so the man who does not desire to have money enough to buy all he wants is abnormal.
더 풍요로운 삶을 욕망하지 않는 사람은 비정상적인 사람이고, 그가 원하는 것을 모두 살 수 있을 만큼 충분한 돈을 바라지 않는 사람이다.
There are three motives for which we live;
우리의 삶에 대한 동기(motive)가 세 가지 있다.
we live for the body, we live for the mind, we live for the soul.
우리는 몸을 위해 살고, 우리는 마음을 위해 살고, 우리는 영혼을 위해 산다.
No one of these is better or holier than the other;
셋 중 어느 하나도 다른 것보다 더 중요하거나 더 신성하지 않다.
all are alike desirable, and no one of the three -- body, mind, or soul -- can live fully if either of the others is cut short of full life and expression.
모든 것은 비슷하게 욕망할만하며, 몸, 마음, 영혼인 세 가지 중 어느 하나도 만약 다른것이 충분히 인생과 표현의 부족이 된다면 충분히 살아갈 수 없다.
It is not right or noble to live only for the soul and deny mind or body;
마음과 몸을 거부하고 영혼 유일만을 위해 살아가는 것이 옳지도 않고 고귀하다고 할 수 없다.
and it is wrong to live for the intellect and deny body or soul.
몸과 영혼을 거부하고 지식만을 위하는 삶도 잘못된 일이다.
We are all acquainted with the loathsome consequences of living for the body and denying both mind and soul;
마음과 영혼을 거부하고 육체만을 위한 삶에서 비참한 결과에 우리는 모두 친숙하게 알고 있다.
and we see that real life means the complete expression of all that man can give forth through body, mind, and soul.
우리는 진정한 삶이란 몸, 마음, 영혼을 통해 퍼지는 모든 완전한 발현을 뜻한다.
Whatever he can say, no man can be really happy or satisfied unless his body is living fully in every function, and unless the same is true of his mind and his soul.
만약 그의 몸이 제 기능을 완전하게 다하지 못하고, 만약 마음과 영혼 또한 그러하지 못하면 그는 진정한 행복과 만족한 삶이 없다.
Wherever there is unexpressed possibility, or function not performed, there is unsatisfied desire.
가능성이 표현되지 못하고, 기능이 실현되지 못하면, 욕망은 충족되지 못한다.
Desire is possibility seeking expression, or function seeking performance.
욕망이 가능성이 표현을 추구하거나 실천을 추구하는 기능이 때문이다.
Man cannot live fully in body without good food, comfortable clothing, and warm shelter; and without freedom from excessive toil.
인간은 좋은 음식, 편한 옷, 따뜻한 집이 없고, 과중한 노동으로부터 자유는 육체적에서는 충만한 삶을 살아갈 수 없다.
Rest and recreation are also necessary to his physical life .
휴식과 오락 역시 그의 육체적 삶에서 꼭 필수적이다.
He cannot live fully in mind without books and time to study them, without opportunity for travel and observation, or without intellectual companionship.
책을 읽고 그것을 공부가 없고, 여행과 관찰의 기회를 갖지 않고, 지적인 동료를 갖지 못하면, 그는 정신적으로 충만한 삶을 살 수 없다.
To live fully in mind he must have intellectual recreations, and must surround himself with all the objects of art and beauty he is capable of using and appreciating.
정신적으로 충만한 삶을 살기 위해서는, 그는 지적인 오락을 가져야 하고, 반드시 자기가 사용하고 감상할 수 있는 모든 예술 작품과 미에 둘러싸여 있어야 한다.
To live fully in soul, man must have love;
영혼이 충만한 삶을 살기 위해서, 사람은 사랑을 가져야 한다.
and love is denied expression by poverty.
그런데 사랑의 표현은 가난에 의해 표현이 거절된다.
A man's highest happiness is found in the bestowal of benefits on those he loves;
사람이 느끼는 최고의 행복은 그가 사랑하는 사람들에 대해 혜택의 증여 속에서 발견된다.
love finds its most natural and spontaneous expression in giving.
사람은 주는 행위 속에서 가장 자연스럽고 자발적인 사랑의 표현이다.
The man who has nothing to give cannot fill his place as a husband or father, as a citizen, or as a man.
남편, 아버지, 시민, 혹은 인간으로서 그의 자리를 채울 수 없는 사람은 아무 것도 줄 것이 없다.
It is in the use of material things that a man finds full life for his body, develops his mind, and unfolds his soul.
인간은 삶 속에서 그의 육체를 찾고, 마음을 개발하고, 영혼을 펼치는데 물질을 사용함으로써 이루게 된다.
It is therefore of supreme importance to him that he should be rich.
따라서 그가 부자가 되는 것은 지극히 중요하다.
It is perfectly right that you should desire to be rich;
부자가 되고자 욕망함은 완벽하게 옳은 일이다
if you are a normal man or woman you cannot help doing so.
만약 당신이 정상적인 남녀라면 부자가 되고자하는 욕망하지 않을 수 없다.
It is perfectly right that you should give your best attention to the Science of Getting Rich, for it is the noblest and most necessary of all studies.
이것이 모든 공부 속에서 고귀하고 필수적이기 때문에, 부자가 되는 과학에 당신의 관심을 쏟아야 하는 것이 지극히 옳다.
If you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to God and humanity;
만약 당신이 부자가 되는 법을 공부하기를 게을리하면, 당신은 당신 자신과 신에 대한 그리고 인류에 대한 당신의 의무를 소홀히 하는 것이다.
for you can render to God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.
왜냐하면 당신은 자신의 삶을 가장 최고로 만드는 것 보다 충만하게 사는 것이 신과 인류에 대한 더 많은 서비스가 없기 때문이다.
